چکیده

Results from molecular dynamics simulations of phase separation in a quenched polymer solution are presented for both twoand three-dimensional systems. Simulations clearly demonstrate the existence of a networklike pattern formation at an early to intermediate time regime for sufficiently dense polymer solutions. This network structure, however, relaxes at late times as the minimization of the interface energy wins over the elastic stress of the network. A crossover of domain growth exponent from a smaller value at intermediate times to the Lifshitz–Slyozov value of 1/3 at late times is seen in three-dimensional ~3D! simulations of network breakup. Our results for the late-time growth exponent and dynamical scaling of the structure factors strongly indicate that the late-time growth kinetics of quenched polymer solutions belong to the same universality class of small molecular mixtures. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~99!50448-0#

Networklike Pattern Formation in Phase Separating Polymer Solutions: A Molecular Dynamics Study

The dynamics of phase separation of a quenched polymer solution is studied using a stochastic molecular dynamics simulation. At early times, the elastic nature of the polymer chains generates a networklike domain morphology for sufficiently dense polymer solutions. However, at late times, this network structure breaks up into disconnected polymer-rich domains to minimize the interfacial energy....

Induced circular dichroism of an optically active polyfluorene derivative in phase-separating solutions

When methanol, a nonsolvent, was added to dilute tetrahydrofuran solutions of an optically active polyfluorene derivative, liquid–liquid phase separation occurred, and circular dichroism (CD) was induced at a low temperature. The polymer concentration of the minor separating phase, estimated by light scattering, was very high (B0.4 g cm 3). The CD induction occurring in that concentrated phase ...

Shear-induced structure in polymer-clay nanocomposite solutions.

The equilibrium structure and shear response of model polymer-clay nanocomposite gels are measured using X-ray scattering, light scattering, optical microscopy, and rheometry. The suspensions form physical gels via the "bridging" of neighboring colloidal clay platelets by the polymer, with reversible adsorption of polymer segments onto the clay surface providing a short-range attractive force. ...

Scattering from deformed swollen gels with heterogeneities

When elastic materials are anisotropically deformed, heterogeneities in stiffness generally produce long-range density variations. The effect is particularly enhanced in swollen gels. We calculate the structure factor from such frozen density deviations under general alline deformations. It is maximized in the most stretched direction, whereas that from the thermal fluctuations is minimized in ...
